scale scape studio
scale scape studio is a personal project by KTAK. I work across graphic design, product design, and spatial design — fields that operate at very different scales.
The word "scape" means more than just the landscape outside myself. It also includes the landscape within: the world of my own thought and imagination.
"Scale," meanwhile, refers to the movement of shifting between micro and macro perspectives. I think of this less as a visual movement, and more as a conceptual one — a movement capable of fundamentally transforming how I perceive and think.
In other words, "scale scape" is the idea that by dynamically scaling the many perspectives inside and outside myself, I can capture a new scape — one I couldn't see before.
Luminous Shadows
I photograph found sea glass and transform it into work. I don't look for the smooth, rounded pieces — I'm drawn to fragments broken into all kinds of shapes by the force of the waves.
I shoot these fragments in the low, angled light of winter. Lit this way, each fragment casts a luminous shadow, and that shadow reveals what's hidden inside the glass: outlines you'd never expect from its original shape, and tiny scratches that surface as texture within the shadow itself.
It's the moment unexpected beauty appears out of trash washed up on the shore — drawing a different kind of value out of something this ordinary is what makes the work so enjoyable for me.
When I shoot, I'm careful about which way I orient the glass — sometimes chasing the beauty of the shadow, sometimes the shape of the glass itself. Either way, the goal is the same: to turn something as concrete as glass and its shadow into a single, unified, abstract image.
